Allergens

Allergens in the indoor environment can come from, for example, house dust mites, pets, mould and pollen. Allergens are substances that can cause allergic reactions. An allergic reaction occurs when the body's immune system has a hypersensitive response to certain substances (allergens).

House dust mite allergy
House dust mites can cause symptoms such as: a stuffy nose, watery, red eyes in rooms with carpets and curtains, and wheezing or difficulty breathing at night. These symptoms are not seasonal and can therefore occur throughout the year.

The symptoms are caused by the house dust mite (also known as dust mite) through an allergic reaction, particularly to the droppings of the house dust mite. House mites are white bugs of the arachnid family measuring between 0.1 and 0.6 mm in size. House dust mites are harmless but can cause allergic reactions and are usually found in homes in dark and damp places and at a temperatures around 25°C. House dust mites feed on human skin flakes (dander): this makes mattresses, pillows and duvets, as well as clothes, carpets, upholstered furniture and toys (stuffed animals) inside the home, but also schools, restaurants, hotels, cinemas, theatres and public transport outside ideal feeding sites for mites.

Mattresses, for example, can harbor up to 1 million dust mites, which means that during an average night's sleep we can come into intensive contact with dust mite droppings for at least 8 hours. Even after only slight physical activity, tiny droppings are released into the air, then inhaled, causing allergy symptoms.
